Chapter 1

In this chapter the author introduces many practical examples of photography. The author lists several photographers’ art work in order to express different aspects of how artists represent their mind via photography. Throughout the century, artists tried to use camera as an instrument to express their ideas, which introduced a new area for photo-taking. Artists started create artwork by first set up the scene they want, and then take photos as intermedium of art. Combined with steady scenes or objects which were settled up earlier and changeable environment, artists can always create amazing artwork which reflects their mind and may be culture background.

Project 3 proposal

The topic of project 3 is “The Self Portrait”, which is a topic existed for decades. For part one of the project, we will take a self-portrait with some part our appearance. This one is kind of simple because we can express ourselves via photo with our appearance. So I will concentrate on part of my face combine with the background environment. However, the second part of the project is tricky with the vague requirement “self-portrait without self-appearance”. This part is more like artwork other than photography. For this part I will concentrate on my daily life interests and life style. At the same time, I will try to include my culture background into this self-portrait. Before I decide the details about how to express my self-portrait, I will look at the history of the self-portrait and browse some of the well-known self-portrait artwork in order to gain knowledge in this area.

Homework - Adobe Bridge and Lightroom

Adobe Bridge has same basic functions with Lightroom but differs in details. First of all, Adobe Bridge only allows user edits photo from existing storage. Lightroom, on the other hand, has its own database to store images and allows user accesses image files at any time. As its name defines, Adobe Bridge acts like a bridge between original image file and real photo editing software; it only includes some basic editing functions. The lack of editing functions makes users of Adobe Bridge must purchase other software such as Photoshop. However, Adobe Bridge’s advantage is that it is compatible to all Adobe’s software. For Lightroom, it is useful especially when viewing and maintaining large amount photos. However, users of Lightroom still require more powerful post photo editing software if they want multiple functions for single photo editing.

Project 1

Landscape photography is my interests of taking photos. I really enjoy travel with my camera and capture every scene that attracts me. Another major concentration of my photos is street photography. The photos for project 1 best represent my photography style.
The first photo was taken on highway. I saw the mountain on my way to Lhasa and then fascinated by the scene which includes the mountain and the prairie. Nest photo is the famous Potala palace. The interesting thing is that I was having dinner before I took this photo. During the dinner I just looped up the curtain randomly and saw the scene in this photo. Actually these two photos are in a series that I took in Tibet last summer. Most of the photo s in this series are landscapes, which perfectly expresses the natural environment of Tibet. However, I also took many photos that concentrate on the life style of people in Tibet. Last two photos of the project 1 can exemplify the local population. Moreover, these photos can determine that religion, the Tibetan Buddhism, is the most important part in local people’s life.
For me, the fascinating part of photography is because it can help us capture memorable moment in our life, and that is why I will keep taking photos.

At this time I don’t have a favorite photographer. However, great photography can always inspires me and help me enhance my skill. For example, photos below were taken by my friend. The magic is that his photos always make me want to know how to take and edit photos as what he did. Although I know good photography requires professional camera and sufficient lens, I admire more about how my friend composes the scene and edits the photo.
